The Sensex and Nifty are “indices (meaning indicator) of a stock market”. There are many other indices other than these indices.

STOCK MARKET – A stock market is a place where you can sell or buy shares or stocks of companies. Basically we called Stock Exchange.
1. BSE – Bombay Stock Exchange
2. NSE – National Stock Exchange

An index is basically an indicator which gives us a general idea about stocks going up or down.
The Sensex is an indicator of all the major companies listed on BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) which is situated at Bombay. The Nifty is an indicator of all the major companies listed on NSE (National Stock Exchange) which is situated at Bombay.

Sensex is a index used to measure the performance of top 30 companies listed in BSE. If SENSEX goes upside that means prices of most of the BSE stocks has gone upside.The 30 component companies which are some of the largest and most actively traded stocks, are representative of various industrial sectors. S&P BSE SENSEX was regarded as the pulse of the domestic stock markets in India. SENSEX is representing 30 companies listed in BSE.

BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange): The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) is an Indian stock exchange located at Dalal Street, Mumbai. Established in 1875, the BSE (formerly known as Bombay Stock Exchange Ltd.) is Asia’s first stock exchange.It claims to be the world’s fastest stock exchange, with a median trade speed of 6 microseconds, The BSE is the world’s 12th largest stock exchange with an overall market capitalization of more than $ 2.1 Trillion as of March, 2019.If I explain in a simple language, BSE is an exchange where all companies of equities are listed and we can trade in BSE through any stock broker.

  • NIFTY: The term nifty is derived from the combination of National and fifty because nifty consists of 50 actively traded stocks. There are different types of Nifty. Nifty based on Indexes that is Nifty 100, Nifty mid-cap 50, Nifty small-cap 50, etc) Nifty is also based on different sectors that is Nifty pharma, Nifty auto, Nifty Realty. If Nifty goes upside it means most of the stocks has turned positive especially those stocks which are heavy weighted on Nifty. Nifty is an index which represent 50 companies listed in NSE.

NSE’s flagship index, the NIFTY, the 50 stock index is used extensively by investors in India and around the world as a barometer of the Indian capital markets. Nifty is an indicator of all the major companies listed on NSE.
